Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS (IBD PAS)

The Institute’s mission is deeply rooted in its long history of excellence in basic scientific research, but it must be periodically revised in response to dynamically changing environment of scientific research and its economical and societal implications.

The Mission of the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology is to excel in basic scientific research, maintaining the highest quality of scientific output in terms of created and disseminated knowledge, which can be applied in the context of wider societal needs to improve the quality of life.

The Institutes' scientific top priority disciplines are neurobiology, neurophysiology, cell biology and biochemistry as well as molecular biology. Although the majority of carried out projects is interdisciplinary as the aim is to explore and describe complex systems, which are characterized morphologically and functionally, down to the molecular level. Recently one patent was granted to the Institute and 6 applications are pending.

  • The Institute operates 31 laboratories and research stations equipped with modern apparatus, among others:
  • Laboratory of Confocal Microscopy,
  • Laboratory of Flow Cytometry,
  • Laboratory of Scanning Electron Microscopy,
  • Laboratory of Behavioral Tests,
  • Laboratory of Electrophysiology.

IBD's Animal Lab Facility, modernized according to EU Directive 86/609, allows the breeding of laboratory and transgenic animals, according to the highest standards. Since 2006, some of the rooms and breeding laboratory has obtained the consent of the Ministry of Environment for the contained use of genetically modified organisms belonging to the category I risk. In 2007 the Institute obtained the consent for the contained use of genetically modified organisms classified in category III risks in the use of GMOs in the modulation of gene expression in selected brain structures using adenoviral and lentiviral vectors as a tool to study learning and memory.

Currently there are 19 ongoing grants awarded as a result of competition by foreign organizations and foundations, including six in the framework of the EU's 6th Framework Programme, six in the framework of EU's FP7, five in the other EU programs and 2 programs outside the EU.

Private companies have shown great interest in the projects (especially those funded by the Structural Funds) implemented by the Nencki Institute. Scientists from the Academy of IBD also have direct experience in cooperation with industry (Adamed, Wista Laboratories Ltd.

To date, the Institute participated in 24 projects of international dimension, including 16 funded by the EU Framework Programmes. The Institute also has a status of the European Centre of Excellence in Neurobiology (draft BRAINS) and National Centres of Excellence BIOIMAGE and MIND.
