ARISE Affording recovery in stroke

Leading European stroke researchers and clinicians with a track record of established cooperation will share their complementary expertise, and team up with SME partners with high profile R&D; and ongoing, promising clinical trials. ARISE research will result in a number of novel, promising therapies, including safer thrombolytics, modulators of the immune system and inflammation, compounds inducing or mimicking endogenous neuroprotection, therapies to induce repair of lost function, as well as a fast way to selectively cool the brain. Experiments will be conducted on a common model and methods platform, in which for the first time relevant comorbidities, gender, age, and long term outcomes will be investigated.


MARK-AGE European Study to Establish Biomarkers of Human Ageing

The major aim of this project is to conduct a population study in order to identify a set of Biomarkers of ageing which, as a combination of parameters with appropriate weighting, would measure biological age better than any marker in isolation. Bioinformatics will be used in order to extract a robust set of biomarkers of human ageing from the large amounts of data to be generated and to derive a model for healthy ageing.


MEMSTICK Synaptic mechanisms of memory loss: Novel cell adhesion molecules as therapeutic targets

The molecular and neurobiological bases of memory deficits are largely unknown and there are currently no drugs available that can markedly decelerate or prevent memory decline. To address this major problem, the MemStick project will investigate the role of novel synaptic cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) in memory loss, and the therapeutic value of targeting these CAMs to restore memory function and associated neurobiological mechanisms at the synaptic level. MemStick project will result in the preclinical development and validation of mimetic peptides for novel synaptic CAMs as potential drug candidates, to treat memory deficits or prevent memory decline.


PLASTICISE Promotion of plasticity as a treatment for neurodegenerative conditions

The focus of the PLASTICISE project is the development of new treatments to promote plasticity and of methods to measure and visualise their effects, focusing on Alzheimer's disease, stroke and damaged visual system. The outcome will be the better understanding of the disease conditions and mechanisms underlying the loss of plasticity in the injured tissue and upon such a base for developing new and effective treatment strategies in Alzheimer's disease and stroke.
